It seems in the art gallery business every decision made is a gamble. Of course, some decisions are riskier than others. When planning the reception for the opening of Migration's newest exhibit, Conscious Clay, we saw that the traditional city-wide First Friday Gallery Walk fell on July 4th. Laura made the executive decision to move the opening to the Second Friday and have it on the 11th. We knew this might throw some of our usual patrons out of their rhythm, but we really didn't think having it on the 4th held much promise.
So how did the gamble pay off? We had a terrific opening! Excellent crowds, terrific conversations, a few great sales, and good times all around. Two of our three featured artists, Tom Clarkson and Steve Mitchell, attended (Stan Hunter was not able to make the trip across the country from his home in California). Tom and Steve graciously entertained the crowds by sharing insights to their work and techniques.
With that roll of the dice paying off, Laura and I will go back to hosting our next openings on the traditional First Fridays... and start thinking of ways to make our next gamble pay off.
