Laura and I just got a terrific email from one of Migration’s top sculptors, Jim Martin. Despite our love of his work, coming from Santa Barbara, California, it has been hard for us to keep a supply of Jim’s exquisite metal sculptures on hand in our Virginia gallery. Getting them across the country is a chore. Our last full-scale exhibit of his work was in Chicago where we were exhibitors at SOFA Chicago last November. Jim’s work sold extremely well there – no surprise. People were quick to respond to the mix of archaic, classical and modern in Jim’s sculpture. It has been often said that his distinctive and elegant forms are made with the meticulousness and precision usually reserved for fine jewelry.
Because Laura and I decided not to exhibit again in Chicago this year, we were thrilled to see that Jim is keeping the SOFA torch burning and will be in Chicago again. This time, however, he will be both an exhibiting dealer and artist! As a dealer, Jim has opened up Covet Gallery based in Santa Barbara. Jim describes the gallery as…
Covet Gallery represents emerging and mid-career American artists whose technique and craftsmanship distinguish their work, underscoring their artistic vision. Art that is well made is a pleasure to collect and display. We feature jewelry and sculptural objects of metal, clay and fiber as well as contemporary painting in oil, mixed media and encaustic.
In addition to exhibiting Jim’s beautifully crafted and engineered metal sculpture at SOFA Chicago, Covet Gallery will also be representing the work of one our most-est favorite designer-jeweler-metalsmith, Janice Ho (pictured right), as well as former Migration outstanding artist, Brooke Marks-Swanson. After having her first child last year, Brooke is back at creating and showing her abstracted midwestern scratched-metal landscapes.
Beyond Jim, Janice and Brooke, Covet Gallery will also be representing the following artists at SOFA: Michael Barnard, Barbara Bouman Jay, Hideaki Miyamura, Victoria Moore, Iva Morris, Brian O'Connor, Eric Silva and Akiko Sugiyama.
If you attend SOFA Chicago this year (November 7-9), drop by Booth 1201 and say to Jim and his crew. Oh… and buy a couple of things too!
