It would be okay with me if we just carve the month of February off the calendar. Go from January (when we are still giddy after the Holidays and New Year celebrations) straight into March (when the daffodils start to pop and spring is in the air). February just doesn't seem to produce much other than continued cold and nasty weather and a collective blah.
As for the arts, I can’t say I've gotten too excited about much out there this month – another strike against February. Luckily, Laura and I are headed to Baltimore this weekend to attend the American Craft Council Show which is guaranteed to perk us up. Other than that… not much at all.
One good thing about February is that it seems to have become a good time to revamp marketing efforts - for us and for artists. I’ve already reported on the re-design of artPark and the updates to Migration's website (two principal marketing tools for Migration). But I have also seen a few artists take advantage of these ugly days, stay inside, and rework their websites. If you are an artist and it's been a number of months since you last updated your website with new photos, future exhibitions, current resume, fresher artist statement, etc. then now is a great time to do it.
Our good friends Jeremy Newman and Allison Ciancibelli who own and operate Twisp River Glass in Washington did just that. Not only do they create some of the finest and most beautiful glass art made today (pictured at right), they now have one of the slickest and most straightforward websites. Check it out here and take notes. This is a great website.
Only one more week left in February.
